Nike Dunk High “Back to School”

August 27, 2008

Just in time for the new school year, Nike releases its Dunk High for the year.  The shoe looks like a canvas adorned with crayon scribbles by a child.   The yellow swoosh is complimented by its yellow laces and soles.  Definitely a unique pair of kicks.  Check it out at the atmos store.

Smile

August 22, 2008

“Don’t Worry, Be Happy” so goes a classic song.

It’s obvious that when people are happy, they smile.  However, studies have shown that the reverse is also true: when you smile, you become happy, or at the very least you enhance your mood.

There is a theory in psychology called the “facial feedback” hypothesis which states that facial movements can drive emotional experience.  For example, those told to make angry faces experienced a greater increase of blood flow to the extremities, which is also symptomatic of those actually experiencing anger.  Those told to smile noted an increase in their mood and feeling more uplifted.

What does this all mean?  The next time you’re feeling blue, down and out, or just in a bad mood, smile!  It may not have you running down the halls and jumping up and down for joy, but a little bit goes a long way to improving your mood.  Try it sometimes =)

I now leave you with Ethan, the Laughing Baby.

To Fuel A Champion

August 15, 2008

What does it take to be perhaps the greatest Olympian of all time? The world may now know. US swimmer and gold medal winning Olympian Michael Phelps consumes about 8,000-10,000 calories of food in a single day. On average, most of us are suggested to consume about 2,000 calories(which varies with age, gender, activity level, etc). Here’s a picture of the typical meal Phelps consumes in a single day.

Lucky Eights

The number eight is considered very lucky by numerologists and in some Asian cultures.

The Chinese word for 8 is “ba,” which sounds like “fa,” which means prosperity and fortune.

Many events are scheduled for the day. Thousands planned months in advance to get married on this lucky day. Many casinos will be hosting special events. Others will be lining up for lottery tickets. It’s no accident that the Olympics will begin at 8:08:08 pm on 8/8/08.

Feeling lucky? This could be your day.

Lopez Lomong

Meet Lopez Lomong, the United States opening ceremony flag bearer at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. His story is as American as it gets, a story of overcoming insurmountable odds and finding hope and a new life in America.

At 23 years of age, Lomong is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, a group of thousands of displaced children who were kidnapped and forced to become soldiers amidst a civil war. Lomong escaped to a refugee camp in Kenya before arriving in the United States.

Over 91,000 attendees and millions more around the world will watch as Lomong leads the US Olympic team as the flag bearer and as he competes in the 1,500 meter race.

Cupcake Madness!

August 3, 2008

Johnny Cupcakes opened up his LA store yesterday. It was quite the scene! Confused moms were asking me, “What’s going on?” “What are they giving out?” “What movie are they lining up for?” Some lady even honked at me in her car to find out what all the commotion was. I was quite amused by a sign the neighboring store put up: “If I knew you were coming, I would have baked a cake!” Check out the new store on 7959 Melrose Ave.

Monsters Love Cupcakes!

August 1, 2008

So I met up with Johnny Cupcakes last night! We had a good half an hour chat about his new store and the tremendous success behind his brand. I know he was extremely busy prepping for the grand opening so I definitely appreciated him taking the time.

What I love about Johnny is how down to earth and humble he is despite his huge success. Here’s someone who’s truly doing what he loves and his passion clearly shows. He’s very detail oriented and truly cares to create an experience for the customer rather than cutting corners to make the most money. He could have easily sold his company and gotten rich millions of times over, but he chose not to. He could have easily placed his clothing in thousands of stores and boutiques, but he chose not to. Johnny didn’t go to college to start his company; he simply trusts his gut and does things his way, often times against conventional wisdom. From his humble roots of selling t-shirts out of his trunk to attracting a worldwide following with his fresh and personal brand, Johnny truly deserves all the success.

His new LA shop on Melrose Ave opens on Saturday, August 2nd. Get there early because people have been lining up since Wednesday!

I met Jose

I met Jose and his friends who came 4 days in advance and parked right outside!
